Historical Land Map Digitization

Executive Summary

When Merced County’s historical land records arrived for processing, the condition of the source material told a familiar story: over a million images on aging 16mm rollfilm, degraded images, and in no shape to support a searchable digital archive. Official records, patent records, and water rights agreements some irreplaceable required precise indexing and multi-stage quality validation just to establish a baseline for processing.

The situation was compounded by a critical upstream vendor failure. The scanning contractor had not maintained proper scan sequence, delivering map records in the wrong order and rendering coordinate-based indexing impossible. iBridge manually re-stitched map segments and rebuilt the spatial structure record by record work that required both technical precision and the kind of institutional knowledge that only comes from 20+ years in archival digitization.

More than 103,000 images required individual enhancement to meet archival standards corrections for contrast, brightness, bleed-through, polarity inversions, film scratches, and line defects. This was not bulk processing. It was hands-on remediation at scale.

The project was completed on schedule with 99.98% accuracy.
